high score

my last project for 2023. it all started as a challenge that i could work on alongside a friend of mine as she did nanowrimo (national novel writing month – a challenge to write 50,000 words of a book in the month of november). i’m not good at writing long songs but i wanted to get out of my comfort zone, so i decided that i would write a 30 minute long song in the month of november. i also wanted to have one main theme and a short motif that would show up throughout the album to help make it a bit more cohesive.

this idea kind of evolved into writing different sections that would all flow into each other (which they kind of do most of the time), with each section exploring a different genre or style or technique. this ruleset resulted in the eclectic album “high score”. i tried to exemplify this whole “continuous” theme with the album artwork, a line begins from the top left and can be followed all the way through to the bottom right, uninterrupted. all music was composed during november, i mixed/mastered everything in december but didn’t alter the music at all after nov 30th.

this year was an important year for me creatively. i didn’t make very much in 2022, so at the beginning of this year i thought for a long time about why i made music, and it resulted in a massive shift in mindset. this ended up being the most prolific year i’ve had since i started making music back in 2014, not to mention the most fun. this release in particular marked the most number of songs i’ve put out in one year, making it my personal high score.
